An IV cannula is a small soft tube inserted by nurses or doctors into a patient's vein to provide easy access to the vein. After insertion the IV cannula makes it possible for the patient to receive medicines, fluids, blood transfusions, or nutrients without any need for repeated piercing of the skin with needles. The cannula has two flaps that make it tightly fixed to the patient's skin surface and an injection port that helps deliver drugs to the patient. IV cannulas are available in nine different gauge sizes ranging from 14G to 26G in various colors.
